Divorce is a qualified change in status that may require employees to make certain changes to their health and insurance benefits coverage. They have 30 days to change coverage after the divorce is finalized.
Here are some steps employees can take to help with this process:
Employees can update their marital status, name, address and any other personal information as applicable at People at Liberty. They must log into the Portal for a full list of direct links to updates they should make. If they need any assistance during the process, they can contact the HR Support Center at 1-877-564-4772.
When the divorce process is finalized, employees must drop coverage for a former spouse. If they have any questions, please contact the Liberty Benefits Center at 1-800-758-4460.
Employees have 30 days from the date of divorce to make changes to benefits. If an employee doesn’t make changes within 30 days, they’ll have to wait until the next Annual Enrollment period or until they have another qualified status change. They may need to provide proof of divorce to change coverage. Employees can make eligible changes to their health and life insurance plans by visiting BenefitConnect. Note: Ex-spouses are not eligible for coverage under the Liberty Mutual health, dental, vision and life insurance plans, even if they employee is required to provide coverage after the divorce.
An employee’s beneficiary designations won’t be changed automatically, even if their divorce decree requires them to name their ex-spouse as a beneficiary. Employees must review and update beneficiary designations for retirement, life and AD&D insurance benefits. Employees can log into the Portal for a full list of direct links to the various beneficiary designations.
Employees must make sure their tax withholding and exemptions are up-to-date. They can visit People at Liberty to update tax elections.
Employees must make sure their important legal documents are up-to-date so they have a plan in place to provide for loved ones. They have access to self-help resources for financial documents as well as a no-cost 30 minute legal consultation through the Work Life Solutions (EAP) Plan. Log into the Portal to view the Work Life Solutions website and phone number.
Employees must update their driver’s license, passport, billing accounts and Social Security, as applicable, to reflect a new name. They can log into the Portal to view an extensive list of what updates to make when changing a name.
Getting divorced can lead to new and challenging issues – legal and financial, parenting and more. The Work Life Solutions (EAP) Plan provides resources, immediate advice over the phone and referrals to virtual and face-to-face counseling. Receive up to 10 free visits per family member, per issue, each year. Employees can log into the Portal to view the Work Life Solutions website and phone number.
